Preview Monday: BATMAN #21 and AMERICAN VAMPIRE: THE LONG ROAD TO HELL #1

Welcome back for another installment of Preview Monday! This week we’re giving you exclusive first looks at BATMAN #21 and AMERICAN VAMPIRE: THE LONG ROAD TO HELL #1.

The tale may be legend but the Dark Knight’s New 52 origin has been shrouded in mystery … until now. Six years ago, Gotham City was ruled by the Red Hood gang and their mysterious leader. A sophisticated collection of anonymous Gothamites, the Red Hoods existed as sleeper agents and stood ready to answer their master’s call at a moment’s notice. Meanwhile, a young and untested Bruce Wayne, legally dead and long since forgotten, arrives in the city ready to take on its new criminal overlord. Can Bruce tackle the Red Hoods without the cowl of the Dark Knight? And what sort of plans does Bruce’s uncle, his enigmatic advisor, have for the heir to Wayne Industries? From the acclaimed and New York Times bestselling creative team of Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, BATMAN #21 kicks off the explosive and highly anticipated “Zero Year.” And visit THE NEW YORK POST for another exclusive preview of the issue, which hits stores this week.

They say the road to Hell is paved with good intentions … and that couldn’t be truer for Billy Bob and Jolene; two star-crossed lovers just trying to pick pocket their way to married bliss and a better life for them both. But when this couple is inducted into the ranks of the undead, their dreams of a bright future give way to a vision of America’s dark underbelly. Now Billy Bob and Jolene are streaking across the country, driven by an insatiable hunger, guided by a boy named Jasper with a penchant for finding ‘bad people’ and desperately hoping to find a rumored cure in Las Vegas. Can Billy Bob and Jolene, dubbed by the media as ‘The Heartbreak Killers’, outrun the darkness growing within them and the mysterious hunter who’s hot on their heels? Find out in AMERICAN VAMPIRE: THE LONG ROAD TO HELL #1, a special one-shot and the latest entry in the extraordinary AMERICAN VAMPIRE saga from co-writers Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque with art by Rafael Albuquerque.

DETECTIVE COMICS VOL. 2 Debuts at #1 on THE NEW YORK TIMES’ Hardcover Graphic Books Best Seller List

On Friday, THE NEW YORK TIMES published their Graphic Books Best Sellers Lists, and debuting at #1 on the Hardcover list was BATMAN: DETECTIVE COMICS, VOL. 2: SCARE TACTICS!

An armed robbery carried out by gunmen dressed as Batman. A string of similar-looking corpses turning up in morgues … then disappearing. An experiment gone dangerously awry, carried out in Bruce Wayne’s own company tower. Somehow, all of these events are tied together, orchestrated by a terrifying killer known as Mr. Toxic, and the fate of Gotham City—and the world—is on the line. Can the Dark Knight piece together the mystery, while also dealing with a gang of fear-gassing Scarecrows, an attack on Arkham Asylum by the Court of Owls and the escape of one of Arkham’s most dangerous inmates—the hypnotic Black Mask?

Announcing Canadian Vampire

WonderCon attendees got chills when Vertigo announced a new American Vampire spinoff this weekend that will be set in Canada and boast an exciting script co-written by Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire.

April Fool's!!!

We were at WonderCon this weekend and certainly revealed plenty of great stuff during our panels, but we’re pretty sure Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire are a little busy to be cooking up silly spinoffs and that Batman would fail to see the humor in letting Alfred E. Neuman anywhere near the Batcave.

Yes, in honor of April 1st (which also happens to be Alfred E. Neuman’s birthday), both DCComics.com and VertigoComics.com were given fake homepage slides. So whether you were fooled by DC Comics’ promise of a new Robin or Vertigo’s Canadian Vampire announcement, congratulations. You’ve been had.

But don’t sweat it. April Fool’s Day is supposed to be fun, and that’s all this little stunt was about. Even better, we’re not about to stop. There’s plenty of April Foolery to be had in comic shops this month. Why, have you seen our 13 MAD variant covers?

You haven’t?! Well, you can look for them gracing some of your favorite DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 titles all month long. Or you can just click here to see them all.

On behalf of all of us at DC Entertainment, have a happy April 1st!

And look for the return of the ongoing series AMERICAN VAMPIRE later this year. In the meantime, AMERICAN VAMPIRE Vol 5, collecting issues #28-34 and the 5 issue miniseries AMERICAN VAMPIRE: LORD OF NIGHTMARES drawn by Dustin Nguyen arrives on March 27th.

Vertigo Announces THE WAKE, A new series by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy

New York Times bestselling author, Scott Snyder (American Vampire, Batman, Swamp Thing) and artist Sean Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus, Joe The Barbarian), the incredible team behind the miniseries AMERICAN VAMPIRE: Survival of the Fittest, are reuniting for a new limited series in 2013: THE WAKE.

Beneath the surface, set amidst the claustrophobic yet beautiful and sweeping ocean-scapes, a discovery is made that will reveal a secret mythology. Full of suspense and horror, THE WAKE is an underwater sci-fi epic like none other.

"I couldn't be more excited about The Wake!” said Snyder about this new comic book series. “This is a story Sean and I have actually been developing together for more than a year, a big, twisted, sprawling science fiction and horror epic, all of which begins with a single, terrifying discovery at the bottom of the ocean. It's one of the most ambitious stories I've ever done, and there's no one I'd rather be creating it with than Sean Murphy. Sean's a great friend and we had a blast together on AMERICAN VAMPIRE: Survival of the Fittest; luckily, he's also one of the industry's brightest new stars, someone with unrivaled abilities as a world-builder—every scene he draws is so fully realized, so richly imagined, it's hugely inspiring working with him, and I'm grateful to him for signing on to be my partner at the end of the world, here."

The adventure begins in 2013!

Spoiler Alert: Look who’s back in AMERICAN VAMPIRE

If you haven't read AMERICAN VAMPIRE #31 yet, don't read below this line. But if you have...

That’s right, Hattie returns in AMERICAN VAMPIRE!

We didn’t want to spoil it, so we showcased this promo image cover for issue #32 by artist Rafael Albuquerque:

But now it’s time to reveal that she is featured on the standard cover of AMERICAN VAMPIRE #32. Here’s what artist Rafael Albuquerque has to say about bringing her back.

"I have missed her so much,” says
Albuquerque.

“It’s really easy to play with characters like her, because anyone who ever felt envy or anger can feel connected to her. Who’s never felt that, after all? That’s why it’s so fun to draw these misfit characters like Hattie--the ones who can take these primal feelings, to the highest level and dare us, mere comic makers, to imagine where we could go if we had no limits.

Thanks for that, Hattie, and welcome back you crazy b---!"

Now, check out the incredible cover below by Rafael Albuquerque and pick up the issue October 31st.
