Mark Doyle reveals the variant cover of AMERICAN VAMPIRE #30

Well “The Blacklist” continues to unfold in AMERICAN VAMPIRE and we celebrate with another awesome variant cover from FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA!

I’ve been a big fan of Francesco’s for a few years (also one of the nicest dudes you’ll ever meet in comics) and it turns out he’s a big fan of the series too! So when I asked him if he’d do a variant cover for us, he leapt at the opportunity to do his version of “our gal Pearl.”

Hope you enjoy the piece and I hope you all like Francesco as much as we do because we’re going to be seeing some more of him around here in the future. Stay tuned…

AMERICAN VAMPIRE celebrates summer blockbuster story “The Blacklist” with five variant covers.

This one changes everything.

I know you hear that all the time in comics, but we REALLY mean it this time. This summer’s blockbuster AMERICAN VAMPIRE storyline is called “The Blacklist,” and the whole gang returns to the place where it all started—Hollywood. But this time it’s the 50’s, so instead of flappers and silent films, tinsel-town is drenched in the fear and paranoia of the Communist “Red Scare.”

Massive turning point. Game-changer. Point of no return…call it what you want, but this one really does change everything.

And because this is such a massive story, we’ve decided to celebrate with not one but FIVE variant covers! Some of the biggest, best names in comics, paying tribute to the various decades, characters and locations we’ve covered in AV so far…

Starting this June with AMERICAN VAMPIRE 28 we have our first variant cover by Scott Snyder’s partner-in-crime over on BATMAN—Greg Capullo! Greg kicks it off with this bad-ass portrait of everybody’s favorite greaser vampire-killer Travis Kidd!

After Greg we have killer covers coming from DAVE JOHNSON, JOCK, FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA and DUSTIN NGUYEN! Come back here each month for more cover reveals.

Speaking of Dustin, don’t forget to check out our awesome new mini-series also starting this June—AMERICAN VAMPIRE: LORD OF NIGHTMARES. Written by Scott Snyder with sensational art by Dustin, this mini is a great jumping-on point for new readers, and also deepens the mythology for long-time fans.

So it’s another big, fang-filled summer from AMERICAN VAMPIRE and remember—this one changes everything!

Announcing AMERICAN VAMPIRE: Lord of Nightmares

Hot on the heels of last summer’s award winning mini-series AMERICAN VAMPIRE: Survival of the Fittest with art by Sean Murphy (now collected in AMERICAN VAMPIRE Vol. 3), Vertigo will publish AMERICAN VAMPIRE: Lord of Nightmares a new 5 issue miniseries written by AMERICAN VAMPIRE creator Scott Snyder, with art by Dustin Nguyen (Batman: Streets of Gotham, Detective Comics, Superman/Batman).

This June, New York Times bestselling author, Scott Snyder returns to postwar Europe and the vampire hunting agency known as The Vassals of the Morning Star. At the core of the story is agent Felicia Book. Felicia has had a dark life, filled with tragedy, but she has finally found peace, raising her adoptive son Gus in Paris. But when Agent Hobbes of The Vassals return to request her help tracking the most powerful vampire of all time, she soon learns nothing can prepare her for the threat inside The Coffin…

“These miniseries are the place where we get to reveal the biggest secrets about the mythology, history, and the evolution of our vampires. I’m excited to return to some of my favorite characters, Felicia, Gus, Hobbes, all of whom have lived their lives fighting a war against vampires who live in the shadows,” said Snyder. “It’s a world where we get to tell their stories in a way where we explore their dreams and their demons and pit them against the biggest scariest vampires you’ll ever see in series with tons of blockbuster action.”

AMERICAN VAMPIRE: Lord of Nightmares is a great companion to the regular series, or a jumping on point for new readers. Head over to MAXIM for the first look at the cover!

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #24 PRIMER by Scott Snyder

WARNING – this primer contains SPOILERS regarding previous issues!!! ROUGH PRIMER on ISSUE #24 of AMERICAN VAMPIRE (PART 3 of 4: “DEATH RACE”) by Scott Snyder TRAVIS 1955. 19 year old punk TRAVIS KIDD is a vampire hunter. One of the best. He’s a rogue. He doesn’t belong to any organization (like the VMS, the secret group in our series that has been tracking and eliminating all species of vampire for centuries). He has been approached by the VMS on many occasions, but he has always turned them down. He drives a 1955 Fury, and keeps an arsenal of vampire killing weapons in the trunk. He likes to dance alone his room to race records/rock and roll. And he keeps a set of wooden fangs in his bag – fangs he puts in himself when he takes down a vampire so he can “bite them back” before they die. Here is Travis fighting your vampire mom: RECAP: ISSUE 22 (part one of this arc) began with two cars careening through the California hills… locked in a death race. Behind the wheel of one car (the black one) was Travis. Behind the wheel of the other, we learned from Travis, was a mysterious vampire, one whom Travis claims killed his family and is responsible for every misery in his life. As the race barrels along, though, in the California hills, the story cut back to show scenes from Travis’ troubled past. So far, we know that he was institutionalized at a young age, in a psych ward. We know that days ago, he stole files on the main vampire he’s after – the one in the other car - from the VMS to learn the vampire’s location. And we know that a girl Travis was dating in order to learn more about vampires in the area – Piper – is tied up in the trunk of the car. In the final pages of our last issue, #23, we discovered the identity of the vampire in the rival car – the one Travis ha been hunting his whole life: Skinner Sweet. One of the stars of our series, Skinner is a new breed of vampire – an American Vampire – with powers and abilities different from Carpathian (classical) vampires. As for his bio, he was a vicious outlaw in the Old West, until a run-in with classic vampires accidentally left him infected. But instead of coming back as one of them, he came back as something new, something more powerful. And he has been causing mayhem throughout the 20th century ever since. Last we saw him, though, he was dying on a cliff on an island in the Philippines during WWII (see AV 13-18 in Vol. 3). How Skinner survived that ordeal is a mystery. As is his connection to Travis. All we know is that Travis wants him dead, and Skinner is always up for a challenge. So check out AV 24, out today. Don’t be a goddam square. Here’s the opener. The brunette is Travis. The blonde is Skinner. Root for your favorite. S

The Death Race Continues!

As you know by now, American Vampire is rip-roaring through the 50’s with a kick-ass story called “Death Race.” Judging from the reaction I’m seeing on the internetz, you kids love you some Travis Kidd! Well, how about a little sneaky-peak of AMERICAN VAMPIRE 24? In stores this Wednesday! Uh-oh! Things don’t look good for Travis!

Lost sketch from Rafael Albuquerque

If you’re like me, you love the behind-the-scenes stuff. Director’s commentary, original manuscripts, awesome documentaries about the making of an album. I love all this creative process stuff. That’s why I like to PACK the collections of our comics with bonus material. If you don’t have it yet, check out AMERICAN VAMPIRE VOL. 3. Tons of bonus sketches and designs from Rafael Albuquerque and Sean Murphy. Awesome stuff. But how about some BEHIND the behind-the-scenes stuff? See below for Rafael's ORIGINAL sketch of the Taipan vampires. He based them on Tengu spirits from Japanese folklore. As the story developed, and we realized these vamps would be more feral, blind, cave-dwellers, he changed the design. But the original was pretty cool too:
