DAYTRIPPER goes back to print

“Daytripper is absolutely breathtaking. Both the writing and the illustrations are beautiful, and the combination is powerful. Moon and Bá . . . create a masterpiece within the traditional constraints of the medium. If you love comic books and you’re looking for a great story, DAYTRIPPER is a must-read.” –WIRED/Geek Dad

“It's a comic that lingers in the head, with powerful writing and vivid art that are a pleasure to behold. . . . The main character dies again and again, forcing readers to contemplate the fragility of life.” –USA TODAY/Pop Candy

On the heels of winning the Eisner Award for Best Limited Series, the incredible collection DAYTRIPPER, by the Brazilian twins Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon, goes back to press for a 4th printing!

A journey about life through the many deaths of its protagonist Brás, DAYTRIPPER is raw, heartbreaking, visually stunning and not to be missed. If you haven’t picked it up yet, there’s no better time than the present.

As Seen at SDCC

San Diego Comic-Con is a great place to see some of your favorite writers, artists, pencillers, and colorists. For those of you who couldn’t make it to the convention or missed these moments, here are a few photographs from my time there.

What it was like to win the EISNER for DAYTRIPPER

Gabriel Bá describes what it was like for him, and his twin brother Fábio Moon, to win the Eisner Award last Friday evening in the category Best Limited Series for DAYTRIPPER.

I still can't believe it.

How can I describe all these feelings? That warmth in my chest, cold in my gut, the overwhelming doubt that makes my mind unable to really focus on anything else than the chances of winning or losing.

Since the moment the Eisner nominees were announced, I was really nervous about it. I didn't want anything to ruin the great feeling we have for this series or stain the great run of the book with something that could be seen as a failure. I didn't want to disappoint the readers who liked the book so much and as much as it wouldn't change the story or anything, losing the Eisner would leave that bad taste in my mouth that would have been hard to shake. Nervous and scared, I was looking down when they were announcing the nominees and I didn't even see which image they put on the screen for our book.

Gladly, we won. The tension and fear that haunted me for three months vanished the moment Louise Simonson said "DAYTRIPPER" and we started shouting. I felt relieved. Everything could go back to normal.

DAYTRIPPER is the most personal and intense story we've ever told and we couldn't be happier with the response we've been getting from everyone. Greatest thing about coming to San Diego every year is getting to meet creators and readers who come to us and tell about the book, the story, the characters. And I'm always impressed by how many people go to watch the Eisner ceremony and it's awesome when they come on Saturday and congratulate you. It's great to see people happy for you. That's the great achievement of this book, touching people and making them feel good about life. We live in a world full of terrible things happening and we almost forget how magical it is to be alive.

Thanks again for this wonderful trip.

--Gabriel Bá

DAYTRIPPER back on the list!

It’s no secret that DAYTRIPPER is an exquisite book--one that puts life in perspective through the many deaths of its protagonist Bras.

Well, I’m excited to share that DAYTRIPPER is on the NEW YORK TIMES Graphic Book Paperback Bestseller List at #1 this week--- again! It debuted at #1 two weeks ago when it was first released.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS features an interview with twin brothers Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon and the book appears in this week's issue of NEW YORK MAGAZINE on the Approval Matrix.

And if that’s not enough, Blair Butler raved about DAYTRIPPER on G4 TV's Attack of the Show, which aired Monday, saying, "One of the best things I've read all year, DAYTRIPPER gets my highest recommendation."

A Vertigo Valentine’s Day with couples to remember

This Valentine’s Day I asked the Vertigo editors to pick a few couples from both classic and current Vertigo titles that defy our expectations of coupledom. I hope you enjoy this unique twist on the holiday we love to not love.

Let’s start off with Will Dennis’ picks:

scal_42_dylux-2-copy
DASH & CAROL RED CROW from SCALPED
I wouldn’t call them happy but they had a pretty good run. It’s hard when you are each other’s heroin...and you’re using heroin at the same time. I don’t think Hallmark makes a card for that.

dmz-32_16_400_2
MATTY & ZEE from DMZ
Again another couple that’s off again/on again is probably not a model for Valentine’s Day romance. Still, when you live in a bombed out war-zone and each day could be your last, it’s nice to have a FWB.

SHELLEY BOND & JOHN CONSTANTINE
I never really saw them together since he’s a bit of a cad and sort of stuck in the Seventies. oh wait...now that I say that, it makes total sense. I really wish them the best in their new marriage and I look forward to more covers featuring Shelly. ya know, like iZOMBIE, DONOR, NEW YORK FIVE, CINDERELLA, etc, etc

In response Shelly Bond says, “That guy needs a reality show.” Here are her picks:

fabl_v3_storybook-love_300

She’s likely to be wearing a demure business suit.
He’s hirsute.

JOHN CONSTANTINE & EPIPHANY GREAVES from HELLBLAZER

He’s a 58-year-old chain-smoking, pint guzzling, detective of the dark arts who’s still missing a thumb
“Heroes” by Bowie
See them get hitched in HELLBLAZER #275

GWEN & ? from iZOMBIE
Monster Hunter, Mummy Guy or Mutt/Were-terrier?
One gorgeous blue-haired, violet skinned brain eater, so little time...left...that she can remember...
Get into it from the grave site in iZOMBIE: DEAD TO THE WORLD, out next month!)
“Love is the Drug” by Roxy Music

hom_cv35_600x900
FIG KEELE & HARRY THE HOUSE from HOUSE OF MYSTERY
An architecture student, Fig drew the plans for her dream house. Then she brought him to life as Harry the handsome bartender. It was all good, until it wasn’t as Harry was taken away.
“Take the L out of Lover (and it’s Over)” by The Motels
Enter the House via the latest trade UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Last, but not least, Karen Berger gives her picks:

swampthing2
SWAMP THING and ABBY from SWAMP THING
He went to Hell and back for her—how could she not fall for the guy?

preacher-book-2-cv
JESSE CUSTER and TULIP O'HARE from PREACHER

ylme-58_17_600_2
YORICK and 355 from Y: THE LAST MAN
Turns out the woman of his dreams was by his side the whole time—his bodyguard—you gotta love it!

BRAS and ANA from DAYTRIPPER
A romance of a lifetime unfolds over a lifetime in this time-bending tale, DAYTRIPPER—a one way ticket to an incredible love and life story just out now in trade paperback.

Daytripper--How much is too much?

How much is too much? That's my constant question while telling a story. There's a delicate balance between words and pictures in a comic book story, and it's easy to get carried away in one direction or the other and flood the reader with too much.

That's why I like doing sketches. They help me understand how this world I'm portraying will work visually. I'm studying the characters to understand - maybe determine - how they look, move, behave and act. I go and research places and try to translate somewhere I've been, or a picture I've seen, into a drawing, figuring out how many details to include and what to leave out.

I did a lot of sketches for DAYTRIPPER. They helped me bring our story to life.
