Adam Hughes Talks FAIREST Cover #1 With Editor Shelly Bond

Cover painter Adam Hughes joins the royal blog party by providing colorful answers to some spectacularly tame questions about FAIREST.

Adam, What was your first painted cover job?

I can't recall; it was in the late 1900s. I don't remember what I had for breakfast today.

Was it difficult to go from being predominantly a line artist to a cover painter?

Not so much that I recall.  Not NEARLY as difficult as going from being a cover painter back to being a line artist.

When you're asked to do cover sketches, what's the first thing you consider?

What's already been done.  Avoiding repetition can help, because knowing what NOT to do helps narrow your options and focus your ideas.

What determines your palette?  For instance, are you more likely to let the art dictate the palette based on how you light the piece or are you prone to choosing palettes based on inspiration, say from a classic painting, and then go from there?

Yes, to both.  I don't have a set of rules; I go with the principles that will work best for a given assignment.  One thing I almost always do: pick the focal point of the piece. Once I know what color it is, I know that all other colors in the palette will be subordinate to it.

Walk us through the steps from approved sketch to finished art for FAIREST #1.

I talked with the editor & writer about what they wanted.  I then did 2 sketches based on the ideas all three of us came up with.  When the final design was approved, I then started sketching each character.  Since it was a 'painted' piece, I worked from life models when I could.  I then rendered the characters in COPIC marker, scanned it into Photoshop, then colored it there.

How long did it take to paint the wraparound cover?

Far too long.

Play Favorites!
Who is your favorite female character to follow in FABLES or Fairest and why?

Rose Red.  She's such wonderful trouble.

Who is your Favorite to paint?

Probably Snow White.

Do you dream in color, black and white or sepia tones?

Color!  1080i, enhanced for 16 x 9 viewing.

BONUS ALERT!  Adam puts on his writing glove to give the ladies of FAIREST some lines to remember them by:

1:  The Snow Queen: Seriously? The BACK cover? Am I not hot enough for the front?

2:  Cinderella: Here! I think THESE will fit even YOUR enormous clown feet...!

3:  Princess Alder: If I'd known, I'd've grown myself some pants.

4:  Beauty: I guess some us actually NEED our beauty rest...

5:  Ali Baba: I never realized how blonde this place was.

6:  Miss Leigh Duglas (Nurse Spratt): Sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesomely thin I am. Now.

7:  Bo Peep: THIS stuff can wake the dead!

8:  Rapunzel: Can we speed this up? I have a haircut at 3.

9:  Snow White: Wakey-wakey! Eggs and bakey!

10:  Briar Rose, our Sleeping Beauty: I'm up, I'm up. Give a girl a minute, hunh?

11:  Rose Red: You snore, you know that? Something fierce.

12:  Ozma: We're not getting any younger, you know!

13:  The Book:  The title is: "Hair Care Do's & Don'ts For Narcoleptics"

14:  Thumbelina: I'm a big fan of small talk, but let's get this party started!

Still breathing since last week’s release of FABLES #114, part 1 of Cubs in Toyland...? Didn’t think so. I realize I’ve been setting you up for weeks about this epic new storyline...but enough about me and my final warnings. Here’s what a few members of the Fables creative team had to say when asked what scares them most about CUBS: Cover artist JOAO RUAS: “I’ll answer the question with another one: ‘Would you trust an 8 year-old with a chainsaw?’” Assistant Editor GREG LOCKARD: “The health and safety of each cub!” Letterer TODD KLEIN: “Sorry! One evil toy picture isn't that scary to me. What Bill does with them could be...” Penciller MARK BUCKINGHAM: “I have to draw eight issues in a row? NOOOOOOOO!!!!!" Here’s a page from FABLES #115. Seeing is believing... Yesterday, we had the day off in honor of President’s Day, so why not toast the occasion by showing off a few pages of inks from iZOMBIE #24, an upcoming guest artist issue by the rockin’ Jim (The Plain Janes, Aphrodisiac) Rugg. It’s a salute to my favorite team member of the undead secret agents known as The Dead Presidents. The incomparable Kennedy appears to be wearing my favorite retro suit combination of all time, which is appropriately modern in any decade including the ‘70s, when the story takes place. Finally, grab your asthma inhaler before lowering your eyes. It’s a page from HELLBLAZER #289 that’s so claustrophobic, even your own personal sound effect (cue lungs) couldn’t do it justice. The Girl Most Likely to be asked not to sing by Karoke King’s management staff, Shelly

From FABLES:  SNOW WHITE & BIGBY WOLF She’s the fairest in Fabletown and a tough business woman to boot. He’s the Big Bad Wolf, an ex-sheriff and the son of the North Wind. They had 7 cubs and one is about to be sucked into a story so epically devastating that if you’re wearing a pacemaker, holding a steak knife or reciting purple prose, please deactivate.  We cannot be held responsible for your medical expenses.  FABLES #114, part 1 of Cubs in Toyland, is in stores tomorrow! From iZOMBIE:  SPOT & GAVIN He’s a thoughtful IT guy by day and a were-terrier by night. He’s a handsome comic-book fanboy by day and The Phantasm when a spirit is moved to possess him. Find out if they’ll have their first kiss before the world ends in iZOMBIE, a monster send-up series replete with paintball gun wielding vampires, evil scientists, dead presidents and one brain-burger eating, hipster zombie girl. Are those couplings so cute they make your cavities quiver ... or perfectly preposterous?  You decide! Happy 2.14.12! Sure, talk is cheap, but the VERTIGO 2012 Preview Sampler is FREE! Head over to your local comics shop in early February for a FREE 32-page preview featuring four new Vertigo monthlies that debut in March. My contribution to the mix is FAIREST, the “sister” series to FABLES, written by Bill Willingham with art by Phil Jimenez and Andy Lanning and painted covers by the incomparable Adam Hughes. Two things you need to know about FAIREST: 1. Many of our stories predate FABLES. So if you’ve always wanted to read FABLES but felt like issue #113 and/or 16 volumes was a bit late in the game to join the party, fear not! This is the perfect opportunity to break out your formal wear and find out what the fuss is all about. You don’t have to understand FABLES at all/on any level to enjoy FAIREST. But if you’re an ardent fan, you’ve got some seriously satisfying surprises ahead! 2. It rotates. Future arcs will include stories by 2011 Arthur C. Clarke winner and always fashion-forward Lauren Beukes (rhymes with mucus—her words, not mine!) and art star Inaki Miranda. Also on deck is the fab Cinderella team of iZOMBIE’s Chris Roberson and Shawn McManus who bring on another spy story starring Fabletown’s favorite secret agent and noted scribe Sean Williams whose storyarc set in India will really take you places. Keep checking back here for more info on the other new series that make their mark in March — assuming their respective editors are just as shameless about self -promotion. And see you next week for Less talk/More action! --Shelly

Vertigo To Publish Several Comic Book Series Same-Day Digital

(SWEET TOOTH #26 is the first Vertigo title to be available same-day digital and is available now)

Vertigo is going same-day digital. Executive Editor Karen Berger announced today during the Vertigo panel at New York Comic Con that several Vertigo comic titles will be available digitally on the same day they are in print. The move follows the highly successful launch of same-day digital with DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

“We’ve found digital to be a great way to bring in new audiences and I’m excited to introduce digital comic readers to these already very popular Vertigo titles,” stated Hank Kanalz, senior vice president of digital, DC Entertainment.

The digital and editorial teams worked together to find “jumping on” points in each comic’s storyline to make it easy for new readers to try out Vertigo comics. Accordingly, here’s a list of Vertigo titles that are going same-day digital and the dates they will begin offering digital versions:

· SWEET TOOTH starting with issue #26 available now
· SPACEMAN the new mini-series by Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso will launch with issue #1 on sale Oct. 26. This exciting new series featuring award-winning talent will be available for a special price of $.99 – a first for digital pricing that makes this series a “can’t miss” event.
· THE UNWRITTEN beginning with #31 on sale Nov. 9
· iZOMBIE beginning with issue #19 on sale Nov. 16
· THE UNWRITTEN .5 issues beginning with #31.5 on sale Nov. 23
· FABLES beginning with the special holiday issue #112 on sale Dec. 21
· AMERICAN VAMPIRE beginning with issue #22 on sale Dec. 28
· HELLBLAZER beginning with issue #287 on sale Jan. 18
