Preview Monday: JUSTICE LEAGUE #14 and FABLES #123

Welcome back for another installment of Preview Monday! This week we’re giving you exclusive first looks at JUSTICE LEAGUE #14 and FABLES #123.

Following the exciting events of JUSTICE LEAGUE #13, Superman has turned against his team after being bitten by the Cheetah. This week, “The Secret of the Cheetah” concludes as the Justice League ventures deep into the Congo in search of Barbara Minerva. Without the help of the Man of Steel, the League must now rely on a local tribe for a way to defeat the Goddess of the Hunt and save their teammate. Will they succeed or will Superman remain a wild beast? And in the back-up story, Black Adam discovers the many ways the world has changed since his imprisonment. From the creative team of Geoff Johns, Tony S. Daniel, Gary Frank, and Richard Friend, JUSTICE LEAGUE #14 hits stores this Wednesday. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

In FABLES #123, “The Destiny Game” reaches its conclusion. In the issue, Ambrose continues his story about the early adventures of his father, Bigby Wolf. After meeting a mysterious green woman who reveals his terrible fate, Bigby has become depressed. It takes a soft-spoken turtle to lift his spirits once again by revealing the woman’s secret. But can the wolf use this secret to change his fate or is it too late? Also included is the continuing back-up story, “A Revolution in Oz”. All is brought to you by acclaimed writer Bill Willingham and artists Gene Ha and Shawn McManus, FABLES #123 arrives in stores this Wednesday. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

AQUAMAN, BATGIRL and SWEET TOOTH spotlighted in THE NEW YORK TIMES’ 2012 Graphic Novel Holiday Gift Guide

Last week, we told you about the various DCE titles making the best-of-the-year lists over at AMAZON.COM and BARNES AND NOBLE.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that THE NEW YORK TIMES has published their 2012 Holiday Gift Guide, and making the Graphic Novels list was AQUAMAN, VOL. 1: THE TRENCH and BATGIRL, VOL. 1: THE DARKEST REFLECTION.

“Two of the best series to emerge from DC Comics’ decision to reintroduce its heroes feature characters that embrace what came before and move forward,” wrote THE NEW YORK TIMES. “In AQUAMAN: THE TRENCH, the writer Geoff Johns is providing the building blocks to make the undersea hero an A-lister, and the artwork by Ivan Reis is magnificent. Over in BATGIRL: THE DARKEST REFLECTION, Gail Simone has returned Barbara Gordon to the cowl, after a miraculous end to her paralysis at the hands of the Joker — though the post-traumatic stress lingers.”

Also mentioned on the list was Jeff Lemire’s SWEET TOOTH, which THE NEW YORK TIMES described as “engrossing.” Click here to check out the full list and congratulations to all!

Sneak Peek inside GHOSTS featuring “Ghost for Hire”

And we're back with the final installment from GHOSTS this week!

Just in time for Halloween, Vertigo has compiled a slew of creepy stories that are primed to get you in the spirit! GHOSTS is an anthology of short stories showcasing both major talents and newcomers in the industry. Arriving in stores on October 31, this collection features a space heist on a ghost ship, a spirit who wants to play synthesizer in a techno band and other dark and twisted tales best read under the sheets with a flashlight.

You’ve seen several pieces of art this week from stories in the collection. Well, we’re excited to close out the week with a spotlight on “Ghost for Hire.” Making his Vertigo debut, acclaimed writer Geoff Johns (JUSTICE LEAGUE, AQUAMAN, GREEN LANTERN, BATMAN: Earth One) joins artist Jeff Lemire (SWEET TOOTH, ANIMAL MAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK) for a story about a ghost-for-hire haunting agency.

Here's what Lemire had to say about working on this story with Geoff Johns, "It was a real thrill for me to work with Geoff. I've written with him before, but to get to draw for him was really special. To be honest, I wasn't sure what kind of ghost story Geoff would deliver and I was pleasantly surprised with "Ghost For Hire." It's whimsical and fun and it has heart. When Geoff said he wanted to do a story like all the old Abbot and Costello movies he watched as a kid it really clicked for me!"

Now, take look at the awesome art by Lemire below.

“I can’t think of a better way to start revealing our guests for 2012 than by announcing Geoff Johns and Jim Lee,” notes Lance Fensterman, Group Vice President for ReedPOP and Show Manager for NYCC.  “They are pre-eminent creators and true industry leaders.  The fans who attend New York Comic Con are especially eager to have access to major publishers and entertainment companies like DC Entertainment and we are grateful to DC for their loyal support through the years.   We are anticipating our biggest show ever in 2012 and we look forward to providing quality entertainment for our thousands of fans.  Geoff Johns and Jim Lee are getting us off to a great start."

“The new 'must read' book.”

We’re so excited for everyone to read JEFF LEMIRE'S first ongoing series SWEET TOOTH (on sale this Wednesday).

And we’re not alone:

"Writer & artist Jeff Lemire has created the new 'must read' book with SWEET TOOTH. It's a fairy tale turned on its ear-or antlers-that takes you on the road trip through an America slightly more fantastical and just as frightening as ours." —GEOFF JOHNS (Blackest Night)

“I would crawl over broken glass to read this.” —JASON AARON (Scalped)

“Lemire's next great work is a shockingly original cocktail of the surreal. A candy-colored nightmare of family, violence and the end of the world.” —MATT KINDT (Super Spy)

"Sweet Tooth is a dark, moving, and intriguing story, and Jeff Lemire's gentle writing and raw, expressive art work perfectly together." —FRANK QUITELY (Batman & Robin)

"A remarkably strange story, drawn in an appropriately expressionistic style. I need to know what's going to happen to Gus!" —PETER BAGGE (Everybody is Stupid Except for Me)

swto_1-1

A cross between Bambi and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, it’s a post-apocalyptic journey full of quiet intimate moments, powerful emotion and an edge that is unlike anything you’ve ever read by Lemire.

Today's WALL STREET JOURNAL Weekend Journal Section features JEFF LEMIRE and SWEET TOOTH. Read the story and preview here.
