Vertigo Announces more Artists for FAIREST: IN ALL THE LAND at FABLESCON

Today at the FAIREST panel at FABLESCON, more of the amazing artists that will be working on this Fall’s graphic novel FAIREST: IN ALL THE LAND were confirmed. So, in addition to Adam Hughes, Chrissie Zullo, Mark Chiarello, Karl Kerschl, we’ll be seeing some superb visuals from Gene Ha, Chris Sprouse, Renae De Liz, and Phil Noto!

And following the FAIREST arc written by Sean E. Williams with art by Stephen Sadowski and Phil Jimenez, featuring the Indu Fables, Bill Willingham revealed earlier this week with NEWSARAMA, that Cinderella is back. Here’s a first look at an interior image by Sean McManus that was shown at the panel.

For this week’s installment of Preview Mondays, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at BATGIRL #9 and FAIREST #3.

You may have noticed that all of the titles in the Bat family this month have one dark and sinister thing in common: the Night of the Owls. Continuing this epic crossover event, BATGIRL #9 pits Barbara against an assassin of the Court of Owls whose target just happens to be her father, Commissioner Gordon. But who is this Talon and can Barbara put a stop to the Court’s diabolical plan before it’s too late for her dad and Gotham City? BATGIRL #9 is written by Gail Simone and is illustrated by Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes. Click here to see an exclusive preview of the issue.

In March, you were introduced to FAIREST. Spinning out of the acclaimed world of FABLES, this new ongoing series centers around the secret histories of Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Cinderella, the Snow Queen, Thumbelina, Snow White, Rose Red and many more. Out this week, issue #3 finds Briar Rose and Ali Baba captured by the Snow Queen. But what does the Snow Queen want with them? And where do the loyalties of Ali Baba’s truly lie? FAIREST #3 is written by Bill Willingham and illustrated by Phil Jimenez, Andy Lanning and Mark Farmer. Click here to see an exclusive preview of the issue.

Tuesday Tonic with Shelly Bond

This week’s Tuesday Tonic is a salute to Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball. Why? Because there’s nothing quite as captivating as the graphic power of high contrast. FAIREST #2, page 18 Pencil by Phil Jimenez, Ink by Andy Lanning When this page popped up on my screen, I practically took flight. it rocketed my chair backwards, punching me through the office walls of a moody colleague (Hi, Will!) and top DC executives. But don’t start a pity party collection on Kickstarter. I’ve already paid the piper and the ride was worth it. HELLBLAZER #292, page 13 Guest artist Gael Bertrand illustrates the epilogue to “Another Season in Hell.” But who in hell is this woman and why am I glad that I’m not stage left?!? IZOMBIE #23 When Allred puts lead on paper, you know the color will do it justice X 10. But seeing the image in black and white still gives you a serious symphony of pedal and metal. The Girl Most Likely to be Unabashedly Random, Shelly

Shelly Bond on FAIREST

Sure, talk is cheap, but the VERTIGO 2012 Preview Sampler is FREE! Head over to your local comics shop in early February for a FREE 32-page preview featuring four new Vertigo monthlies that debut in March. My contribution to the mix is FAIREST, the “sister” series to FABLES, written by Bill Willingham with art by Phil Jimenez and Andy Lanning and painted covers by the incomparable Adam Hughes. Two things you need to know about FAIREST: 1. Many of our stories predate FABLES. So if you’ve always wanted to read FABLES but felt like issue #113 and/or 16 volumes was a bit late in the game to join the party, fear not! This is the perfect opportunity to break out your formal wear and find out what the fuss is all about. You don’t have to understand FABLES at all/on any level to enjoy FAIREST. But if you’re an ardent fan, you’ve got some seriously satisfying surprises ahead! 2. It rotates. Future arcs will include stories by 2011 Arthur C. Clarke winner and always fashion-forward Lauren Beukes (rhymes with mucus—her words, not mine!) and art star Inaki Miranda. Also on deck is the fab Cinderella team of iZOMBIE’s Chris Roberson and Shawn McManus who bring on another spy story starring Fabletown’s favorite secret agent and noted scribe Sean Williams whose storyarc set in India will really take you places. Keep checking back here for more info on the other new series that make their mark in March — assuming their respective editors are just as shameless about self -promotion. And see you next week for Less talk/More action! --Shelly
