3 Vertigo Original Graphic Novels To Look Out For in 2011

Vertigo has lots of wonderful graphic novels slated for 2011 and we're going to make some publishing news today. We've got the announcement of a memoir, the unveiling of a terrific blurb and an exclusive first look at an interior piece of art from one. Enjoy.

So you’ve read Persepolis, Palestine, and CUBA: My Revolution among others. What’s next to curb your appetite for smart, personal, and poignant graphic novels? Well, we’ve got it. Get ready for MARZI to be published this Fall.

Told from a young girl’s perspective of innocence and curiosity, MARZI is Marzena Sowa’s account of growing up in 1980s Communist Poland. Sowa weaves stories of her childhood shaped by politics to form a compelling and powerful narrative. Drawn by Sylvain Savoia, MARZI is an incredibly fresh and honest portrait of growing up behind the Iron Curtain.

MARZI could not be more different than AARON & AHMED, the eagerly awaited graphic novel by McArthur Prize Fellow and novelist Jay Cantor and acclaimed artist James Romberger. We've just got the first blurb in for the book, from acclaimed novelist Darin Strauss. Check it out:.

“AARON & AHMED is our smartest writer's most deeply-felt, fun book. What's important here isn't that Jay Cantor somehow concocted a story that digs into 9/11, Gitmo, radical Islamism, meme theory, and American political smarm; it's that he taps depths of feeling not often encountered outside Melville, Drieser, or Shakespeare. Rich in emotional truths, timely, poignant, acute, a real thrill, even funny -- what a read!” –Darin Strauss, author of Chang and Eng

We'll have lots more about AARON & AHMED on GRAPHIC CONTENT in coming months, so for now we'll leave you with that blurb and the promise of more to come...

Meanwhile this May, get ready to celebrate with DELIRIUM’S PARTY: A LITTLE ENDLESS STORYBOOK. The diminutive versions of the Endless, from Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN mythos, join together to rid Despair of her unhappiness and the festivities turn as outrageous and unpredictable as Little Delirium's haircolor.

Brought to life through whimsical prose and watercolors as vibrant and unforgettable as its author/artist, Jill Thompson, how can you resist?

We can’t wait for you to read them and the many other terrific books we’ll be publishing this year. Each book is distinctive and bold and could not be anymore different from the other. It's just a taste of what Vertigo has to offer this year.

A quick chat with Pornsak Pichetshote

I’ve asked a few of the editors about their time here at Vertigo. You’ve seen pieces by Will Dennis, Mark Doyle, Jonathan Vankin and Angela Rufino. Next up is Pornsak Pichetshote, you saw a photo of him just a few days ago laying out the pages of THE UNWRITTEN #17 on the floor of his apartment.

PM: What was the first Vertigo book you read?

PP: This is a complete blind guess, but the furthest back I can trace is THE INVISIBLES # 1. INVISIBLES led me to PREACHER which led me to TRANSMETROPOLITAN, which in turn led me to SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE, SANDMAN, SWAMP THING, HELLBLAZER, ANIMAL MAN and DOOM PATROL, and then before I knew it, I begrudgingly had to admit I was a VERTIGO fan. (For some reason, when I was in college, I considered VERTIGO a goth publisher, and thought I couldn’t really be a fan, since I wasn’t a goth.)

PM: What was the first Vertigo book you edited?

PP: You always remember your first… THE LOSERS # 21. THE LOSERS was a special experience for me. Before I had any aspirations to work in comics, I was a comics fan, who had heard of the buzz of this Ocean’s 11 meets Three Kings book, and I think I bought the first issue the week it came out. Then, I got the job as an assistant editor at Vertigo, and I think the day issue 2 came out was one of my first weeks on the job. By issue 5, I became the assistant on the book, with Will Dennis (the editor who developed the book with Andy and Jock) slowly letting me contribute more and more of my input as it progressed. By issue 21, Will handed the book over to me to edit, and I’ll always be grateful to him for trusting me with it. (It is hard to give up your kid to let somebody else raise). The original art for the very last page of the series is framed in my apartment.

PM: How do you acquire a comic book series or graphic novel?

PP: Me, I’m basically looking for books that are going places that VERTIGO hasn’t gone before. As a result, new pitches involving angels, hell and demons usually makes my eyes gloss over. But anything else, I’m game. I’m actually not a fantasy / sci-fi fan, but as a result, I enjoy looking for fantasy / sci-fi pitches that can convert me. When it works out, like it seems to with THE UNWRITTEN, everybody wins. Aside from that, I’ll approach anyone whose work impresses me, regardless of the medium I’ve discovered their work.

DELIRIUM’S PARTY: A Little Endless Storybook by Jill Thompson to be published in 2011!

The popular Endless characters from Neil Gaiman’s THE SANDMAN are back as children in the highly anticipated follow-up to The Little Endless Storybook written and painted by mulitple Eisner-Award winner Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother, Magic Trixie and others).

DELIRIUM’S PARTY: A Little Endless Storybook brings all the Endless siblings (Dream, Delirium, Destruction, Death, Destiny, Desire and Despair) together in an effort to break Despair of her unhappiness. In a touching and whimsical story, beautifully drawn and water-colored by Thompson, DELIRIUM’S PARTY is an extravaganza that will delight readers of all ages.

I spoke to Jill about her return to the Little Endless and here's what she had to say, "I'm so pleased to be able to play in the Sandman playground again. I love the Endless and I really enjoy being able to tell quirky and cute stories with them in their 'Little Endless' form! They are such a fan favorite that I always want to create something that lives up to everyone's expectations, mine included-because first and foremost, I am a fan of these characters! I think Delirium's Party will be a nice follow up to the first Little Endless storybook! Despair is the best 'straight man' for comedy ever! Well, after Neil and Sandman, of course...!"

A quick chat with Mark Doyle

I thought it would be fun to get to know some of the editorial group behind your favorite comics and graphic novels a bit better, so I started asking questions.

First up, Mark Doyle.

PM: What was the first Vertigo book you read?

MD: Sandman. I blame that book for my current occupation.

PM: What was the first Vertigo book you edited?

MD: My first solo gig was Northlanders #17. Will Dennis was kind enough to hand me the amazing team of Brian Wood and Vasilis Lolos doing a one-off story where they break down the art of Viking single combat. It had amazing characters, awesome insight and history and it was a one-off—my favorite kind of comic. If you never read it, scour the back bins for that issue or check it out in the collection “Northlanders Book Three: Blood in the Snow.”

PM: Thanks Mark. And dont forget, NORTHLANDERS #24 comes out this Wednesday.

SANDMAN COVERS REVEALED FOR FULLY RE-COLORED PAPERBACK EDITIONS

Most of you reading this blog on a regular basis would likely agree that the re-coloring initially done for ABSOLUTE SANDMAN was:

a) Beautiful.
b) So beautiful it’s hard to put it into words.
c) “Lavish.” (As described by the DENVER POST, PATRIOT NEWS and LIBRARY JOURNAL)
d) Or, in the words of the NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW, “Beautiful… lavish.”

Seriously, the re-coloring done for ABSOLUTE SANDMAN (with improved production values, natch) was truly stunning.

Beginning next year, Vertigo will publish new trade paperback editions of SANDMAN in ten volumes - remastered and corrected versions of the comic the Los Angeles Times Magazine called “the greatest epic in the history of comic books,” featuring newly designed covers using Dave McKean’s spectacular and innovative art. We've got the very first look at the covers of volumes one and two here. The books are still filled with amazing stories by Neil Gaiman. They just look better.

Absolute Death

It looks amazing and includes anything and everything DEATH, including an Introduction by Amanda Palmer, solo artist of Dresden Dolls fame, and a Gallery of DEATH which includes numerous artist renditions of the delightfully goth fan-favorite among other extras.
