FABLES: WEREWOLVES OF THE HEARTLAND Debuts at #1 on THE NEW YORK TIMES’ Hardcover Graphic Books Best Seller List

This afternoon, THE NEW YORK TIMES published their Graphic Book Best Sellers Lists and debuting at #1 on the Hardcover list was the new Vertigo original graphic novel, FABLES: WEREWOLVES OF THE HEARTLAND.

Over the past ten years, FABLES has captured the hearts and minds of readers in an ever-expanding magical universe that spans numerous titles, series and formats. Snow White, Bigby Wolf, Frau Totenkinder, Little Boy Blue and Jack Frost are just some of the popular cast who appear in 17 Volumes; the graphic novel 1001 NIGHTS OF SNOWFALL; the spin-off series JACK OF FABLES, CINDERELLA and now, FAIREST; and the prose novel, PETER AND MAX.

This month, Bigby Wolf finally got his own original graphic novel with FABLES: WEREWOLVES OF THE HEARTLAND! This next chapter in The New York Times bestselling, Hugo Award nominated, multiple Eisner Award-winning series is written by Fable’s creator Bill Willingham with art by Jim Fern (JACK OF FABLES), Craig Hamilton (FABLES, ABSOLUTE SANDMAN), Ray Snyder (52), Mark Farmer (ANIMAL MAN) and cover by Daniel Dos Santos (PETER AND MAX).

Bigby Wolf’s adventure begins as he heads west looking for a location where he can start a new Fabletown. He stumbles onto a small town named Story City populated solely by … werewolves. Not Fables but also not Mundy’s (Fable-speak for regular, mundane, people), these werewolves, who are connected to Bigby in more ways than one, know and revere him like a god. So why are they trying to kill him? The only thing that’s certain is that this is the most horrific and action-packed FABLES story to date!

SCALPED Tuesday Tonic with editor Shelly Bond

This edition of Tuesday Tonic is dedicated to someone else’s book for a change.  Shocked?  You should be.  Here’s a solid three-page sequence from SCALPED #59 — the penultimate issue of the series.  The choreography alone blew my tiny little mind into bits of red fluff.  If you’re not reading this bloody crime thriller, it’s the perfect time to double down and prep for the grand finale!   The ninth trade paperback as well as issue #59 are in stores next month.  And if you see me at a celebrity gala and there’s a crease in my Merc tonic menswear ensemble, blame it on Will Dennis, the editor who will be ironing my shirts from now until Labor Day.

SO PURE IT FLOATS...

Comics have become pretty flashy these days...you can read them digitally on your ipad, kindle, phone, etc. The printed pages are slick, the colors are alive and the packaging is top grade. There’s movies, tv shows, toys, and numerous other ways to engage with the product. It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that at the heart of all this, it’s still comes down to lines of black ink on plain old white paper. Here’s a page of SCALPED 56 (on sale 2/29) that shows exactly what I’m talking about...see the defiant look on Dash’s face in panel 2, the light/shadow on Red Crow’s face in panel 3, the uneven lines of the bricks, the rust spots on the jailhouse doors...there’s a lot of life in these simple drawings. Thanks for reading. peace and hair grease, will dennis

A Vertigo Valentine’s Day with couples to remember

This Valentine’s Day I asked the Vertigo editors to pick a few couples from both classic and current Vertigo titles that defy our expectations of coupledom. I hope you enjoy this unique twist on the holiday we love to not love.

Let’s start off with Will Dennis’ picks:

scal_42_dylux-2-copy
DASH & CAROL RED CROW from SCALPED
I wouldn’t call them happy but they had a pretty good run. It’s hard when you are each other’s heroin...and you’re using heroin at the same time. I don’t think Hallmark makes a card for that.

dmz-32_16_400_2
MATTY & ZEE from DMZ
Again another couple that’s off again/on again is probably not a model for Valentine’s Day romance. Still, when you live in a bombed out war-zone and each day could be your last, it’s nice to have a FWB.

SHELLEY BOND & JOHN CONSTANTINE
I never really saw them together since he’s a bit of a cad and sort of stuck in the Seventies. oh wait...now that I say that, it makes total sense. I really wish them the best in their new marriage and I look forward to more covers featuring Shelly. ya know, like iZOMBIE, DONOR, NEW YORK FIVE, CINDERELLA, etc, etc

In response Shelly Bond says, “That guy needs a reality show.” Here are her picks:

fabl_v3_storybook-love_300
SNOW WHITE & BIGBY WOLF from FABLES
She’s likely to be wearing a demure business suit.
He’s hirsute.
“Isn’t it Romantic?” By Rodgers and Hart
See where it all began in FABLES Vol. 3: STORYBOOK LOVE

HLB Cv275.indd
JOHN CONSTANTINE & EPIPHANY GREAVES from HELLBLAZER
She’s a 23-year-old smoking hot alchemist/gangster’s daughter
He’s a 58-year-old chain-smoking, pint guzzling, detective of the dark arts who’s still missing a thumb
“Heroes” by Bowie
See them get hitched in HELLBLAZER #275

izom_11-copy
GWEN & ? from iZOMBIE
Monster Hunter, Mummy Guy or Mutt/Were-terrier?
One gorgeous blue-haired, violet skinned brain eater, so little time...left...that she can remember...
Get into it from the grave site in iZOMBIE: DEAD TO THE WORLD, out next month!)
“Love is the Drug” by Roxy Music

hom_cv35_600x900
FIG KEELE & HARRY THE HOUSE from HOUSE OF MYSTERY
An architecture student, Fig drew the plans for her dream house. Then she brought him to life as Harry the handsome bartender. It was all good, until it wasn’t as Harry was taken away.
“Take the L out of Lover (and it’s Over)” by The Motels
Enter the House via the latest trade UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Last, but not least, Karen Berger gives her picks:

swampthing2
SWAMP THING and ABBY from SWAMP THING
He went to Hell and back for her—how could she not fall for the guy?

preacher-book-2-cv
JESSE CUSTER and TULIP O'HARE from PREACHER
The most dangerous couple in comics survived treachery, separation, death, and resurrection—if that’s not true love, then what is?

ylme-58_17_600_2
YORICK and 355 from Y: THE LAST MAN
Turns out the woman of his dreams was by his side the whole time—his bodyguard—you gotta love it!

dayt-3_16_clrr1
BRAS and ANA from DAYTRIPPER
A romance of a lifetime unfolds over a lifetime in this time-bending tale, DAYTRIPPER—a one way ticket to an incredible love and life story just out now in trade paperback.
