SDCC 2012: Vertigo: Fables

If you’re a Fables fan, 2012 is proving to be a great year with an exciting Toyland-set storyline and the launch of Fairest, the well-received Fables spinoff that focuses on some of the feisty female residents of Fabletown. A great year deserves a great Fables panel, so once again we’ve assembled the talent behind the multi-Eisner Award winning Vertigo series to discuss what’s next for Fables and Fairest. It’s bound to be legendary.

Sitting alongside moderator John Cunningham on the room 6DE stage is a colorful crew of panelist that include series writer and creator Bill Willingham, group editor Shelly Bond, and artists Mark Buckingham, Lauren Beukes and Steve Leialoha.

It’s a fair bet that their discussion is going to be anything but mundane, and you can follow it all as it unfolds below:

SDCC 2012: Vertigo: Get Jiro!

In a future where master chefs control the city like crime lords and diners will literally kill for a seat at the best restaurants, one renegade sushi chef will ignite a war between kitchens that will leave far more than discarded seafood in its wake. GET JIRO! is a stylized send-up of modern food culture that could only come from the mind of Anthony Bourdain, the New York Times bestselling author and star of TV’s “No Reservations” and “The Layover.” Released earlier this month to great acclaim, Get Jiro! is an original graphic novel co-written by Joel Rose and drawn by Langdon Foss.

Gathered together in room 6DE, moderator John Cunningham along with Anthony Bourdain, Langdon Foss and Vertigo Senior VP – Executive Editor Karen Berger are all set to discuss this remarkable project and answer questions from the audience.

If you’ve read the graphic novel, you understand why we’re hoping no one asks them for a California Roll. But if anyone does, you’ll be the first to know as we bring the panel to you live:

Vertigo: A View From the Cutting Edge of Comics

For close to twenty years, Vertigo has been home to some of the most imaginative and original comic book storytelling in print. It’s quite a legacy, but with ongoing titles like Fables, American Vampire and The Unwritten and new favorites like Fairest and Punk Rock Jesus, Vertigo’s current stable of writers and artists seem more than up to the task. Whether you’re a relatively new Vertigo fan, or have been with the publisher since the very first issue of Sandman, you’re not going to want to miss this look at where Vertigo will be taking us over the months ahead. And Sandman fans may want to pay particularly close attention…

Joining moderator John Cunningham in room 6DE are Senior VP – Executive Editor Karen Berger, editors Shelly Bond and Will Dennis, Scott Snyder (American Vampire), Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire), Bill Willingham (Fables, Fairest), Mark Buckingham (Fables), Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth), Mike Carey (The Unwritten), Sean Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus), Mike Allred (iZombie), Dustin Nguyen (American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares) and more.

We’re closing out Thursday with a lively evening discussion and a few big announcements. And you can follow it all below:

Just announced: Vertigo to publish BLACK ORCHID Deluxe Edition

In Spring 2012, Vertigo will publish a BLACK ORCHID Deluxe Edition from The New York Times Bestselling author Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and innovative artist Dave McKean.

BLACK ORCHID is a haunting exploration of birth, death and renewal. After being viciously murdered, Susan is reborn fully grown as the Black Orchid, a hybrid of plant and human, in order to avenge her own death. Now as this demigoddess attempts to reconcile her human memories and botanical origins, she must also untangle the webs of deception and secrets that led to her murder. Beginning in the cold streets of a heartless metropolis and ending in the lavish heartland of the thriving Amazon, this book takes the reader through a journey of secrets, suffering, and self-rediscovery.

Currently out of print, this new Deluxe Edition hardcover features lush painted artwork by McKean and will make a gorgeous addition to your Neil Gaiman collection.

Just announced at SDCC: THE UNWRITTEN .5 issues!

Created by Mike Carey and Peter Gross, THE UNWRITTEN has been called “a roller-coaster ride through a library, weaving famous authors and characters into a tale of mystery that is, at once, oddly familiar yet highly original,” by USA TODAY.

Some of the most talked about issues have been the fabulous one-offs—from the Willowbank Tales of Mr. Bun to the Pick-A-Story origin of Lizzie Hexam. In the vein of those amazing issues, Vertigo will publish a series of 5 interconnected issues that will enhance the reading experience of the ongoing series.

Starting this November, THE UNWRITTEN will be published twice-monthly--with issue #31, followed by #31.5 followed by issue #32, followed by issue #32.5, and so on, through issue 36.

Issue #31 begins Tommy Taylor and the War of the Words, a game-changing story event. Tom Taylor goes to war against the cabal that has tormented, imprisoned and tried to destroy him - and it's far more than just a war of words! To have a hope of winning, Tom must use every weapon he can get hold of, but even storybook magic carries its own risks.

In the special .5 issues, Tom's crusade plays out against the backdrop of the cabal's sinister secret history and delves deep into the dark past of some of the series' major players. When it's all over, very little will remain Unwritten.

Written by Mike Carey, each of these issues will feature artistic contributions from some of the most talented artists in the industry, including ongoing series artist and co-plotter, Peter Gross. Yuko Shimizu will continue her gorgeous work on covers for each issue.

Check out the Cover to issue #31:

WASH IN (BOILING) HOT, RINSE & REPEAT (X 20)

HELLBLAZER editor Shelly Bond has some interesting information to share about tonight’s Vertigo panel and a certain piece of missing clothing. So read up and we’ll see you there!

Elvis Presley had his Aloha Special jumpsuit Ziggy Stardust had his moon boots.

But what’s John Constantine’s signature garb--other than a soggy Silk Cut and a surly expression? Could it be a certain rank, blood/alcohol/nicotine/demon brain-stained article of clothing? You’re about to find out thanks to John’s perpetually troubled niece, Gemma, who steals his trademark coat and puts it online for anyone to buy. Will life be better or worse for London’s dodgy mage without his trusty dreamcoat? And what about the poor souls who come in contact with the crusty old thing that has been worn to death (and back) by a crusty old occultist named Constantine?

THE DEVIL’S TRENCH COAT, a new HELLBLAZER storyline, flashes all its got this Fall. And if you’re at the San Diego Comicon this Thursday, July 21, don’t miss the Vertigo Panel from 5:45 – 6:45 when we give away an original, signed...wait a minute...that would be telling.
