Originally launched in the early 1980’s, HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE returns this July as a new six-issue miniseries. In the inaugural issue (on sale this Wednesday), Skeletor has rewritten all of Eternia's history. Now a scrawny and simple woodsman caring for his ailing father, Adam (a.k.a. He-Man) is haunted by dreams of his past glory. With the help of his hawk, Zoar, he decides to set out on a journey to rediscover his rightful destiny. Preview Mondays: DIAL H #2 and SWEET TOOTH #34

For this week’s installment of Preview Mondays, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at DIAL H #2 and SWEET TOOTH #34!

Last month, you were introduced to the world of DIAL H. As part of the “Second Wave” of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, the inaugural issue was a dark look at the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero. In issue #2, Nelse begins to learn how to use the H DIAL and become an array of different heroes. But the more he figures out, the more he begins to suspect there is something sinister at work. And who’s trying to hunt him down? DIAL H #2 is written by acclaimed novelist China Mieville and is illustrated by Mateus Santolouco. Click here to see an exclusive preview of the issue.

A special stand-alone issue, SWEET TOOTH #34 spans from the beginning of the Plague to the present. Written and illustrated by Jeff Lemire and featuring guest art by Nathan Powell, the issue tells the story of two brothers, Johnny and Abbot. But what caused the rift between these two siblings and can their relationship be saved before it’s too late? Click here to see an exclusive preview of SWEET TOOTH #34.

Jose Villarrubia: BITTER SWEET

Working with Jeff Lemire in Sweet Tooth has been a career and personal highlight for me… After the first couple hesitant issues, where I was trying to find a coloring approach that was right for the series and Jeff’s art, it has all been smooth sailing… I feel that Sweet Tooth almost colors itself, the art is so bold, the storytelling so clear, the characters and environments so consistent, that I can see the pages in color in my mind's eye when I first receive them. Because of this advantage, I have had room in this series to do more color that emphasizes emotional states than in any other project I have been involved with so far…. Jeff and our three editors have all been a dream to work with. And, no surprise, I am crazy about the story and characters…. It is almost painful to color when something bad happens to one of them… This is a testament to the integrity of the work within a medium that is flooded by gratuitous (and unaffecting) violence. I am so thankful to Jeff for this opportunity… and look forward with great anticipation to our next collaboration.

Jeff Lemire: BITTER SWEET …

When I started working on Sweet Tooth three years ago I thought I’d be lucky if the series made it ten issues. I never dreamed I’d be able to tell the kind of sprawling, 40-issue epic that it ended up becoming. In many ways Sweet Tooth’s likelihood of survival in the competitive comics market was about as great as Gus’ likelihood of survival in the post-apocalyptic world he inhabits. After all, who would have bet on a weird little book about a boy with antlers ever surviving in a market flooded with blockbuster cape and tight titles? But somehow it did. Because of my incredibly loyal fans and the a lot of hard work from collaborators like Matt Kindt, Nate Powell, Emi Lenox and, of course, my closest and most valued teammate, the great Jose Villarrubia, Sweet Tooth survived.

So why end it now? I want to make one thing really clear…Sweet Tooth is not being cancelled. The decision to end it at #40 is entirely my choice. Truth is, I always knew what the ending of Sweet Tooth would be.  It was one of the first ideas I came up with when writing the pitch for the book. The beginning and the end of this story were always pretty much written in stone, it was the middle bit that was fluid, and grew and changed as I went along. So, for me it’s incredibly gratifying to finally get to the end of the journey with Gus and Jepperd. Everything I’ve done with the series so far, everything I’ve built month after month, has all been about this, the final story.

I suppose I could have stretched it out a bit longer. I could have had a few more obstacles pop up along the way to Alaska to lengthen the journey (and the series), but it just felt like it was time. Gus wanted to get to Alaska now…and who am I to argue?  I’ll miss my little antlered friend. But I owe it to him to finish his story properly. To “leave it all on the ice” as they like to say up here in Canada. And that means not prolonging the series just because I can.

But don’t give up on me. I really feel the best is still to come. The final arc, THE WILD KINGDOM, will be full of everything you’ve loved about Sweet Tooth as well asmany new surprises, new characters and new revelations. And it all builds to one final double sized, fully painted final issue with #40 this December.

And then what? Well, stay posted, because the future holds new adventures, new stories and new ideas from Jose Villarrubia and I!

Preview Mondays: ACTION COMICS #9 and SWEET TOOTH #33

For this week’s installment of Preview Mondays, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at ACTION COMICS #9 and SWEET TOOTH #33.

With guest artist Gene Ha joining regular series writer Grant Morrison, ACTION COMICS #9 features a standalone tale of an alternate Superman on a parallel Earth. Returning to the comic book page with his debut in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, this Superman of Earth 23 is now confronted with a rift between worlds, and faced with a monstrous Superman surrogate from another Earth gone horribly wrong.

The issue also features a back-up story by writer Sholly Fisch and artist Cully Hamner, which showcases this alternate Superman and his adventures on Earth 23.

Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue, highlighting the heroic origin of this alternate Man of Tomorrow – whose secret identity is Earth 23’s United States President, Calvin Ellis.

And SWEET TOOTH #33 features the continuing adventures of the big man and the boy, as they traverse the apocalyptic wasteland. Written and illustrated by Jeff Lemire, this issue features a special landscape presentation, providing a storybook view of the austere environments and the bleak tale of survival. But the issue’s visual orientation isn’t all that makes it special; SWEET TOOTH #33 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Sweet Tooth’s journey. And though he would never admit it, even Jeppard fears what’s still to come. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

Preview Mondays: STORMWATCH #8 and SWEET TOOTH #32

Apollo is missing and earth is being attacked from the inside out. In order to retrieve their friend and save the universe, the Stormwatch team is left with no option but to defy the laws of science and travel through space and time. But can they do this before it’s too late? STORMWATCH #8 is written by Paul Jenkins and features art by Ignacio Calero, Daniel HDR and Sean Parsons. Click here to see an exclusive preview of the issue.

And in the conclusion to “Unnatural Habits,” Jepperd will need to make his way back to the dam after being held captive in the woods. But when his return is greeted by the fall of one of his friends, it’s hardly a welcome homecoming. SWEET TOOTH #32 is written and illustrated by Jeff Lemire. Editor Mark Doyle reveals some AWESOME SWEET TOOTH WATER COLORS

I’m back! Did you miss me? (don’t answer that…)

Way back in January I teased some clues about upcoming stuff in the books I edit. One of the clues I gave was “sharpen those blades.” Some people might have thought I was talking about Northlanders. Nope, it was Sweet Tooth 32. This issue has one of my favorite scenes ever. The blades I was talking about? Hockey skates. Check it out, you’ll see…

And since you Sweet Tooth fans are so awesome, and you’ve been waiting patiently for my return to the Vertigo blog, I’ll share with you some water color studies from Jeff Lemire. Check it out

Groundhog Day

Groundhog day is coming up later this week. This is the day when we hope for an early spring and re-watch one of the greatest movies of all time (“This is pitiful. A thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat…”) But I’d like to take a moment this Groundhog Day to pay homage to another fuzzy little fella who likes to burrow in the ground—BOBBY. Bobby is my favorite SWEET TOOTH character and today I’d like to share with you one of my favorite panels of him from the upcoming SWEET TOOTH #31: Look at that little ear twitching! I love this guy. Here’s hoping for an early spring! And don’t forget SWEET TOOTH 30 in stores this WEDNESDAY 2/1!
