SWEET TOOTH #11 and more!

Ever since issue #1 I've wanted to know more about the seemingly heartless killer we know as Jepperd. In the most intense issue of SWEET TOOTH yet, all of Jepperd's secrets are finally revealed as he recalls the most horrendous time of his life and the vicious events that made him the man he is today. Shocking and brutally violent, In Captivity, In Captivity--the second storyline of the series USA TODAY says "is like Mad Max with antlers"- concludes with issue #11 on sale this Thursday.

In addition, we are proud to announce that Jeff Lemire has signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics! So fans rejoice as you enjoy his work not only here at Vertigo, but also in his upcoming ATOM co-feature in ADVENTURE COMICS and the ongoing SUPERBOY series at the DCU.

Here’s what Jeff has to say about it all:
"As a life long DC Comics fan, I am incredibly excited to be a part of both the DCU and of Vertigo moving forward. Sweet Tooth has been a labor of love for me and I couldn't have done it without the amazing support of Karen Berger and everyone at Vertigo. So, the opportunity to not only continue Gus and Jepperd's saga, but also take on the new Superboy monthly and the adventures of Ray Palmer, The Atom is a dream come true for me!

Both the DC and Vertigo line ups at the moment are full of amazing creators and amazing characters and I'm thrilled to have the chance to be a part of that in the years to come!"

Vertigo Graphic Connection

It’s been an eventful week here at Vertigo.

BOING BOING gave SWEET TOOTH Vol. 1 a rave review saying, “Jeff Lemire's Sweet Tooth Vol. 1: Out of the Woods is a great post-apocalyptic graphic novel in the tradition of The Walking Dead and Y: The Last Man, featuring likable innocents walking a blasted, ruined America, helped and hindered by good people gone bad, and bad people gone worse.”

And as for NEIL YOUNG’S GREENDALE, in case you missed it:

THE NEW YORK TIMES ran an amazing feature on the front of the Arts Section with quotes from Young, Dysart and Chiang

THE SEATTLE TIMES and MEMPHIS COMMERCIAL APPEAL ran a Nationally syndicated review from SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE

WIRED ran a feature with 3 exclusive pages of art

LARGEHEARTED BOY posted a playlist, AMERICAN SONGWRITER featured the book

And AM NEW YORK and LA WEEKLY featured pieces with Chiang

Happy reading and have a wonderful weekend all!

And for those of you in NYC, I hope to see you tonight at Rocketship as we celebrate GREENDALE with artist Cliff Chiang.

Sweet Tooth #10 preview

Writer/artist Jeff Lemire continues to amaze. He has recently appeared on 207/BILL GREEN’S MAINE-WCSH6 TV in Portland and features have run on the Young Adult Library Services blog and AIN'T IT COOL NEWS.

Issue #10 of his on going series SWEET TOOTH is on sale tomorrow!

In the most bizarre issue yet of this acclaimed series, Dr. Singh takes Gus on a surreal journey into his own past, his strange upbringing, and the even stranger teachings of his mysterious father. But will they find what Dr. Singh is really looking for? And what use will Gus be once they do?

Here's a peak inside:

Jeff Lemire talks SWEET TOOTH

As some of you may know, I have a son named Gus. No really. I’m not talking about the antlered-hero Sweet Tooth, I really have an amazing little antler-less 15-month old at home named Gus too. The fact that I named my lead character after my newborn son should tell you how personal and important the Sweet Tooth saga is to me.

Working on the first 12 issues of Sweet Tooth over the last year was really hard. Don’t get me wrong, I love waking up and drawing comics every day, but trying to maintain the rather intensive work schedule I need to keep and help raise a new baby has been really tough. Looking back I can remember months where I barely slept and still managed to squeeze out an issue. If it weren’t for my remarkable wife I surely wouldn’t have been able to. (Speaking of whom, check out this Sweet Tooth doll she made me!)

Becoming a Dad has changed me…in ways I guess I really don’t fully realize myself yet. But watching the real Gus grow over the last year has been so incredible that I can’t help but wonder how the fictional Gus will evolve and change as a result?

That’s the fun of doing an long-term, ongoing project like Sweet Tooth. You can plan the thing out in as much detail as you want before you start, but life has a way of changing you, and your stories have room to breath and grow as a result. I’m thankful for everyone who’s jumped on board to follow antlered-Gus’ journey. I know where he’s going, but exactly how he’ll get there is still a mystery. I hope you’ll stick around as I try and solve it.

--Jeff

Be the Editor of SWEET TOOTH--Contest Extended!

There’s a very specific category of readers – a category that, judging by online chatter and the people I meet at conventions – is actually growing. They’re the readers who’ll buy a comic book in both the single issues and the trades. Even with a rough economy and a lot of competition, they love that comic so much, they want that monthly fix of “what happens this month in…” and they want the collection of that comic to keep on their bookshelves. And, honestly, for a comics creator, you can’t ask for a better fan.

So, with the first volume of SWEET TOOTH hitting comics stores today, Jeff Lemire and I thought we’d do something fun with that thinking in mind.

You see, when it was time to put the first volume of SWEET TOOTH together, Jeff and I realized there were changes we had to make from the published comic to the trade. To be exact, there were two changes Jeff and I decided to make that affected three pages of the trade paperback. They’re not corrections, censorships or special features. They’re things (one more subtle than the other) that we felt needed to be changed, because if we published the pages the exact same way in the trades as in the single issues, they would look like mistakes in the trade, even though they read wonderfully in the single issue.

What were they? Well, I figured I’d ask you.

If you can find out what those two changes were from the comics to the trade AND the reasons why we made them, we’ll send you a copy of SWEET TOOTH Vol. 1 signed by the ENTIRE creative team, that’s Jeff, Jose Villarrubia, Pat Brosseau, (and I’ll even scribble on it too). If I know Jeff, he’ll also throw in a sketch of Gus in there as well. Just email your answers to Pamela.mullin@dccomics.com and we’ll give out prizes to the first ten people that get it right.

West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin once said that he makes his shows for the least passive members of the audience. For the fans that point out that the amount of wine in someone’s glass differs from shot to shot. Because these things don’t work without engagement. I can speak for Jeff, Jose, Pat and myself: We agree 100%. We make this book for the engaged. And for those so engaged they’re willing to double-dip, we make this book especially for you, and this contest is kind of our gift back.
