Vertigo Week-In-Review: April 13

Here at Vertigo, we pride ourselves on being edgy. It’s not enough to publish a comic about Jesus, we have to make him punk rock. If we’re going to tackle the subject of modern warfare, we’re going to focus on the war that hundreds of soldiers wage each day on their own lives. And if we’re going to publish a presidential drama, it’s going to have aliens in it, dammit. But this week we’re embracing our more artistic and literary side, as we learned two of our graphic novels have been nominated for the Huge Award. We’re honored to be up for such a prestigious award. But we’re still likely to come to the ceremony with shaved heads and mohawks.

Let’s see what other trouble we got into this week, shall we?

We kicked things off by announcing PUNK ROCK JESUS, a new miniseries written and drawn by Sean Murphy of JOE THE BARBARIAN and AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST fame.

Later on we discovered that two of our books and several of our creators are finalists for the 2012 Hugo Award. The awards will be given out in the late summer, but feel free to congratulate our nominated creative teams now.

We got real with Will Dennis, as he shared some words from Eric Trautmann about one of his inspirations in writing SHOOTERS.

Finally, we joined the pilgrimage to Chicago for the third annual C2E2. On Thursday, we posted our panel schedule, and today we went live with our CON AWAY FROM CON coverage.

We’ll be bringing you updates from C2E2 all weekend. And we’ll be bringing you a new Week-In-Review next week. Until then, stay edgy!

Vertigo Week-In-Review: April 6

SWEET TOOTH, THE NEW DEADWARDIANS, GONE TO AMERIKAY, the deluxe edition of FLEX MENTALLO: MAN OF MUSCLE MYSTERY, Eisner Award nominations… We’ve had a lot to celebrate this week on VertigoComics.com, and considering that we’re entering the weekend, there’s really no need to stop the celebration. But we’re happy to take a brief pause as we look at what went down this week.

Here’s what happened on VertigoComics.com…

Editor Mark Doyle revealed that SWEET TOOTH #32 contains one of his favorite scenes in the series, and showed off some great Jeff Lemire watercolors.

Have you GONE TO AMERIKAY yet? Executive Editor Karen Berger offered up some thoughts on Vertigo’s new hardcover before sharing writer Derek McCulloch’s notes on his text and some of artist Colleen Doran’s sketches, pencils and reference images.

After that Will Dennis reminded us how many steps there are to producing a single comic book page by breaking down a NEW DEADWARDIANS page for us and introducing us to some important, yet often overlooked, members of the creative team.

Finally, we announced this year’s Eisner Award Nominations. DC Entertainment earned a total of 15 of them, and 10 of the nominations were for Vertigo titles and creators. Congrats to all of the hardworking men and women who made these books the successes that they are!

And with that, we return to our comics and cocktails. Have a happy holiday weekend, everyone!

Vertigo Week-In-Review: March 30

If you’re no longer living, it was a very good week for you here at Vertigo. Wednesday saw the release of THE NEW DEADWARDIANS #1, our new vampire/zombie series set in post-Victorian England and written and drawn by the creative team of Dan Abnett and I.N.J. Culbard. As a result, the website was crawling with all things undead (try not to get nervous, they can smell fear) along with the very much alive Will Dennis.

Here’s what happened this week on VertigoComics.com…

We started things off by giving you a look at the original project pitch, which actually begins with the writer apologizing for what he’s about the pitch. We wouldn’t usually recommend this approach. Except, of course, when it works.

Later, Will showed us Cliff Chiang’s variant cover to The New Deadwardians #1, and told us why we should all go out and Google Aubrey Beardsley. But please, wait until you’ve finished reading our Week-In-Review.

We then gave you a look at an early sketch of the series protagonist, as Will explained how The New Deadwardians was unusual for arriving on his desk with an artist attached. No, we don’t mean that literally.

Finally, we wrapped things up with a look at what's to come. If you've read the first issue, you know that The New Deadwardians is a fresh take on zombies and vampires. Even if the zombies and vampires smell a little...less than fresh.

Next week, we return once again to the world of the living (but not necessarily human). See you then!

Vertigo Week-in-Review: March 23

Aliens, voodoo queens, plant and human demigoddesses… We sure were hanging out with some strange and wonderful characters this week. And we’re NOT talking about the cosplayers at WonderCon.

Here’s a review of what’s been happening on VertigoComics.com…

We got started by recapping the Vertigo: New Blood WonderCon panel as part of our Con Away From Con coverage. You might have missed WonderCon, but that’s still no reason you need to miss out on all the latest Vertigo news.

After that, Will Dennis showed off some early Saucer Country cover sketches, care of series artist Ryan Kelly.

Speaking of covers, have you seen the gorgeous cover to the BLACK ORCHID DELUXE EDITION? If the answer is no, you really should click here.

Finally, we wrapped things up with a triple dose of DOMINIQUE LAVEAU: VOODOO CHILD. On Wednesday, Karen Berger shared the project proposal with our enquiring minds, and on Thursday, she interviewed writer and creator Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and on Friday, she interviewed artist Denys Cowan.

That’s it for this week, but don’t worry. We’ll be back again in seven.

Vertigo Week-In-Review: March 16

We like to stay busy over here at Vertigo, and our guess is that our readers are the same way. So, you’ve probably missed out on some of the big Vertigo news to hit the website this week. That’s okay, we understand. But we still want you to be informed. Informed people are interesting people. They’re attractive people. And we want our readers to be interesting and attractive. (We’d also like them to be very wealthy and take us on all-expenses-paid cruises to the islands, but we’ll settle for two out of three.)

This week we took an early look at FAIREST #2, announced a new AMERICAN VAMPIRE miniseries, and gave you a glimpse of what SAUCER COUNTRY looked like when it was just a pitch and a dream.

Here’s a review of what happened this week…

Who doesn’t like looking at Ali Baba and Sleeping Beauty, especially when drawn by Phil Jimenez? Well, feast your eyes on FAIREST #2, which we previewed on Monday.

We also announced AMERICAN VAMPIRE: Lord of Nightmares, a new miniseries to be written by Scott Snyder, drawn by Dustin Nguyen and starring Agent Felicia Book.

This week saw the release of SAUCER COUNTRY #1, a new series that mixes alien abduction with something even scarier—politics. Just for fun, we thought we’d share writer Paul Cornell’s original series pitch.

Finally, we wrapped things up this week by inviting you to join us for the NYC launch party celebrating the release of GONE TO AMERIKAY, a new graphic novel by Derek McCulloch, Colleen Doran and Jose Villarrubia.

That’s it for this week’s Vertigo Week-in-Review. We’ll see you good folks again next week (assuming we all survive WonderCon).
