DC AND VERTIGO IN 2011, TO BE CONTINUED....

I love ongoing stories. I adore cliffhangers. One of my favorite parts of reading comic books is being absorbed into a never ending story, one with infinite worlds.

Yet I often find I have a love/hate relationship with three words:

To be continued.

Those three words get the adrenaline pumping, and fill me with a weird mix of hope and anticipation. To be continued? But I want more! And now!

At the end of the day, though, I prefer seeing those three words over reading the alternative: the end.

So, I'm here to announce that our two weeks of teases and announcements on THE SOURCE and GRAPHIC CONTENT will... be continued, over the weeks and months to come in 2011. Consider this post the close of a chapter.

Not to pat ourselves on the back but these last two weeks have been a fun ride. In case you stepped away from the internet for a loooooong break, here's the skinny... We announced a new ongoing series, a spin off mini-series, a new character, the return of a major artist exclusively to DC Comics, two new graphic novels, a new ongoing artist, a new series written by an actual rock star, and even brought back a fan favorite, cult classic. We provided teases and hints of what's to come and made some digital news, too. Not to mention those exclusive looks at some highly
anticipated shows, an animated film and two very high profile games.

And the best part?

We're just getting started.

Flashpoint. Spaceman. Aquawar. Superheroes in FABLES. War of the Green Lanterns.

There's a lot of story to be told, with many, many announcements to be made. One of the commentors on THE SOURCE noted that our company usually makes major announcements in February and March and I can confirm that
is indeed the case.

Thanks to everybody who followed along the last two weeks on both THE SOURCE and GRAPHIC CONTENT. Thanks most especially to everybody who weighed in with comments. Keep those comments coming. We are listening.

We are closed Monday for the holiday, but we'll be back first thing Tuesday morning.

To. Be. Continued.

David, Pamela and Austin.

SPACEMAN. A REAL CONVERSATION between Will Dennis and Brian Azzarello

AZZ: I got an idea for a new series.
ME: What’s it called?
AZZ: SPACEMAN.
ME: SPACEMAN? Is that one word or two?
AZZ: It’s one. Like SUPERMAN.
ME: It’s like SUPERMAN?
AZZ: No! It’s like SUPERMAN but not like SUPERMAN.
ME: So what’s it about.
AZZ: A spaceman. What the hell else would it be about?
ME: Right. And it’s with the entire 100 BULLETS team?
Azz: That’s the plan.
ME: Cool. Can we get it out in 2011?
AZZ: Why the hell not?
ME: Book it.

3 Vertigo Original Graphic Novels To Look Out For in 2011

Vertigo has lots of wonderful graphic novels slated for 2011 and we're going to make some publishing news today. We've got the announcement of a memoir, the unveiling of a terrific blurb and an exclusive first look at an interior piece of art from one. Enjoy.

So you’ve read Persepolis, Palestine, and CUBA: My Revolution among others. What’s next to curb your appetite for smart, personal, and poignant graphic novels? Well, we’ve got it. Get ready for MARZI to be published this Fall.

Told from a young girl’s perspective of innocence and curiosity, MARZI is Marzena Sowa’s account of growing up in 1980s Communist Poland. Sowa weaves stories of her childhood shaped by politics to form a compelling and powerful narrative. Drawn by Sylvain Savoia, MARZI is an incredibly fresh and honest portrait of growing up behind the Iron Curtain.

MARZI could not be more different than AARON & AHMED, the eagerly awaited graphic novel by McArthur Prize Fellow and novelist Jay Cantor and acclaimed artist James Romberger. We've just got the first blurb in for the book, from acclaimed novelist Darin Strauss. Check it out:.

“AARON & AHMED is our smartest writer's most deeply-felt, fun book. What's important here isn't that Jay Cantor somehow concocted a story that digs into 9/11, Gitmo, radical Islamism, meme theory, and American political smarm; it's that he taps depths of feeling not often encountered outside Melville, Drieser, or Shakespeare. Rich in emotional truths, timely, poignant, acute, a real thrill, even funny -- what a read!” –Darin Strauss, author of Chang and Eng

We'll have lots more about AARON & AHMED on GRAPHIC CONTENT in coming months, so for now we'll leave you with that blurb and the promise of more to come...

Meanwhile this May, get ready to celebrate with DELIRIUM’S PARTY: A LITTLE ENDLESS STORYBOOK. The diminutive versions of the Endless, from Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN mythos, join together to rid Despair of her unhappiness and the festivities turn as outrageous and unpredictable as Little Delirium's haircolor.

Brought to life through whimsical prose and watercolors as vibrant and unforgettable as its author/artist, Jill Thompson, how can you resist?

dple_galley_13

We can’t wait for you to read them and the many other terrific books we’ll be publishing this year. Each book is distinctive and bold and could not be anymore different from the other. It's just a taste of what Vertigo has to offer this year.

THE UNWRITTEN Heads To Sea

The literary adventure continues. Caught in the novel Moby Dick, Tom finds himself swallowed up in the belly of a whale with characters from other famous stories who’ve wound up in the same predicament.

Here's a sketch from the last page of issue #22 by Peter Gross. Can you tell from the outlines who’s who? Hint: One of them is that kid whose nose grows when he lies.

Fables Superheroes?

FABLES issue #102 begins a new storyline – SUPER TEAM. What’s this you ask? Superheroes in FABLES? Let’s hear what editor Shelly Bond has to say:

“My initial reaction was probably similar to yours: WTF?!?! But then Bill offered up an explanation. It's a sendup to 1950 comic books - sort of. In classic Willingham style, Bill wanted to do a storyline that was nothing that any Fables fan could see coming...what else could you do post 101 issues but give readers something truly unexpected? But trust me--it's more than Ozma's big idea to form a super team to ward off evil powers...there are relationship troubles galore involving Beauty and the Beast and their new bundle of joy (?), Snow White and Bigby and even some reappearances by characters long forgotten and abhorred.”

The covers for this 5 issue storyline will be homages to classic DC covers. Here are the first three by Joao Ruas:

CINDERELLA confronts nemesis from the past

Just who is Cindy’s enemy who was thought dead?

Here’s a hint from writer Chris Roberson: The second Cinderella miniseries, CINDERELLA: FABLES ARE FOREVER, sees Fabletown's greatest super-spy coming face-to-face with an enemy that Cindy had thought long dead. And we learn that Fabletown wasn't the ONLY community of Fables in the Mundy world, after all.

A FLIGHT OF ANGELS

Angels, like fairies, are mystical creatures that fascinate people everywhere.

This Fall, the bestselling YA author Holly Black of The Spiderwick Chronicles teams up with Bill Willingham of Fables fame, Alisa Kwitney (The Dreaming, Flirting In Cars), Louise Hawes (The Vanishing Point), and T. D. Mitchell (The Traitor King) to explore their diverse mythology in A FLIGHT OF ANGELS. From tales of the dangerous to the all-powerful to guardian angels and angels of death, A FLIGHT OF ANGELS is a gorgeous graphic novel lushly painted by Rebecca Guay.

Brian Wood heads back to college this month

But before we get to that, let’s talk DMZ with series writer, Brian Wood. “We just passed the five year mark on the series, a milestone in itself, and we're going full speed into the final year of the series. You'll see, at long last, the resolution to the war that's plagued the world of DMZ for so many years, and well as the story of Matty, Matty + Zee, and the supporting characters (something we've begun in the "Collective Punishment" arc). "FREE STATES RISING," the current storyline, will take us through to #64, and it kicks off not only the final battle for Manhattan, but explains exactly why the Free States Army has been so quiet in recent times. DMZ's been an incredible series to write, and it's nothing without the superhuman efforts of artist Riccardo Burchielli, all the guests artists we've had over the years, John Paul Leon, and editors Will Dennis, Mark Doyle, Casey Seijas, and of course Karen Berger. At 72 issues, DMZ will stand as one of Vertigo's longest-running series.”

Now, onto everyone's favorite cold weather series NORTHLANDERS. “This is a busy time for the series," says Wood. "Next issue will conclude the story Becky Cloonan is drawing, "The Girl In The Ice," then Simon Gane comes in to draw "The Siege Of Paris," followed by Matthew Woodson on "The Hunt." Matthew's an illustrator with almost superhuman talent - google him - and his story will be a high point in the series. Beyond that, I have notes for a short story called "Thor's Daughter" that'll continue NORTHLANDERS' run of powerful one-shot stories. This is the book I increasingly feel I was born to write, and is so completely tied into my identity as a creator. And based solely on the incredible range and diversity of the artists we've had on the series, there is nothing else like it out there.”

So, what’s this about heading back to college? As second semester begins, so does THE NEW YORK FIVE. This four issue miniseries is not only a unique peek inside college life in New York City, but it’s stunning to look at as well. Brian, take it away.“Artist Ryan Kelly and I are good friends and even better collaborators - with Local, then The New York Four, and runs on both DMZ and NORTHLANDERS. THE NEW YORK FIVE is both a sequel to The New York Four and its own thing, and at 32 pages of story (in each 32 page issue), it’s a satisfying chunk.”

Oh, and did I mention it’s stunning? Take a look inside at Riley and the gang:
