Just in time for Halloween, Vertigo has compiled a slew of creepy stories that are primed to get you in the spirit! GHOSTS is an anthology of short stories showcasing both major talents and newcomers in the industry. Arriving in stores on October 31, this collection features a space heist on a ghost ship, a spirit who wants to play synthesizer in a techno band, a ghost-for-hire haunting agency and other dark and twisted tales best read under the sheets with a flashlight.

Over the past week we’ve been spotlighting a piece of art from several of the stories included in the collection. Today, in the final installment we’re spotlighting, “A Bowl of Red” written by Neil Kleid.

“It's been a long time since I did anything for Vertigo (one of the side effects of being a 'veteran' in an industry) so I was very pleased to be asked by the gorgeous Will Dennis to contribute to the first issue of a new anthology, said artist John McCrea. “When I got the script from the devastatingly handsome Neil Kleid I knew it was going to be a pleasure to sink my artistic teeth into. I called on the services of the sublimely beautiful Andrew Elder (to provide colour) and the resultant visual feast is served up in a piping hot bowl of horror by your chums at Vertigo- Happy Halloween.”

You’ve seen several pieces of art this week from stories in the collection. Well, we’re excited to close out the week with a spotlight on “Ghost for Hire.” Making his Vertigo debut, acclaimed writer Geoff Johns (JUSTICE LEAGUE, AQUAMAN, GREEN LANTERN, BATMAN: Earth One) joins artist Jeff Lemire (SWEET TOOTH, ANIMAL MAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK) for a story about a ghost-for-hire haunting agency.

Here's what Lemire had to say about working on this story with Geoff Johns, "It was a real thrill for me to work with Geoff. I've written with him before, but to get to draw for him was really special. To be honest, I wasn't sure what kind of ghost story Geoff would deliver and I was pleasantly surprised with "Ghost For Hire." It's whimsical and fun and it has heart. When Geoff said he wanted to do a story like all the old Abbot and Costello movies he watched as a kid it really clicked for me!"

We’re back with another installment from GHOSTS!

Just in time for Halloween, Vertigo has compiled a slew of dark and dangerous stories that are primed to get you in the spirit! GHOSTS is an anthology of short stories from some of the biggest talents in the industry. Arriving in stores on October 31, this collection features a space heist on a ghost ship, a spirit who wants to play synthesizer in a techno band, a ghost-for-hire haunting agency and other dark and twisted tales best read under the sheets with a flashlight.

Throughout the week we’re spotlighting a piece of art from several of the stories included in the collection. Next up, “Treasure Lost” a story by Paul Pope (BATMAN: Year 100, WEDNESDAY COMICS) with art by Pope and a script by David Lapham (DIAL H,YOUNG LIARS).

“It was a great thrill to work with Jared, Lovern, and David. We got a chance to flex some Metal Hurlant muscles,” says artist Paul Pope. “I gave Lovern a selection of photographic slides of oil smears to use for the textures, to give the color some extra richness. He knocked it out of the park on the colors... This little strip is a tribute to Moebius and Robert Louis Stephenson. A "ghost" story of a different stripe.”

Now, see what Paul is talking about. Check out the page of art below with colors by Lovern Kindzierski.

This week we’re spotlighting a piece of art from several of the stories included in the collection. First up, Neil Gaiman’s DeadBoy Detectives return in “The DeadBoy Detectives in Run Ragged,” a story written by noted British novelist Toby Litt.

“Working on "Run Ragged" has been exceptionally good fun!  I am once again getting to play in Neil Gaiman's wonderful world of the Sandman, and draw Charles and Edwin for the first time in nearly twenty years (last time was briefly in the Swamp Thing Annual during the Children's Crusade), says artist Mark Buckingham. “It is also always a treat to work with a new writer and I am loving Toby Litt's story, with its equal measures of humour and horror. Best of all I am drawing layouts for my good friend and Spanish superstar artist Victor Santos. It has been really inspiring swapping sketches and ideas with him as we have worked. This has been a genuine artistic collaboration and the whole thing has been very liberating. I would love to do more things like this in the future!”

On Sunday, September 23, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., a record 280+ top national and international authors and participants will join bibliophiles, booksellers and literary organizations on 14 stages at Brooklyn Borough Hall (209 Joralemon Street) and Plaza, Columbus Park, St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights Public Library, Brooklyn Law School, the Brooklyn Historical Society and St. Ann & The Holy Trinity Church for the seventh annual Brooklyn Book Festival. The Festival is supported by AT&T, which is providing an exciting new app to help guide Festival-goers (details to be announced shortly!).

Comics and Graphic Novel Programming has more than doubled in 2012, with major headliners like the Hernandez Bros and recent LA Times Book Prize award-winner Carla Speed McNeil. The Festival’s unique programming approach integrates comics artists on panels with authors and journalists, recognizing and advocating for comics as literature that crosses genres. These pairings offer fresh takes from the usual con fare--and give readers of traditional prose insight into the appeal and power of graphic narratives. In addition, fans will also have a full-day of panels just focused on comics to choose from. There’s something for everyone--from Comics Quick Draw on the Youth Stoop to the all-star cartoonist line-up in Worlds Built Over Time in the St. Francis auditorium. See full listings attached.

All Festival events on Sunday, September 23, are free and—for the first time this year—there will be “Clix not Tix,” meaning no more tickets or ticket lines. Additionally, for the first time ever, the expanded “Bookend” literary-themed events comprise a full week of more than 50 happenings at venues that include clubs, bookstores, theaters and libraries across the borough from September 17 – 23. Most Bookend Events are free (a few charge a modest admission). Comics Book End events include a celebration of the landmark Graphic Canon publication; Adrian Tomine’s gallery opening for New York Stories; a live comics reading with favorites like Michael Kupperman and Julia Wertz, and a Comics Rock event with the Hernandez Bros at The Rock Shop. See full listings attached.
